Funny? I think not!

Ok so this real life incident seemed to tickle everyone's funny bone at work. Please tell me this (or something like it) has happened to you and make me feel better :(

Time - 6.30pm
Place - 2 kms from home atop the flyover
Ambient noise - Cars honking + swear words flying around in the air
Traffic condition - Nose-to-nose

"Driving back at this time is not half bad", I said to myself, "Another 15 minutes and I should be home early enough to cook my dinner and lunch for tomorrow". Crossing this signal usually takes forever but it looked like I'd clear it in the first shot! Suddenly the car's engine went off. "Oh well it's a downward slope now anyway", I exclaimed as I hit the AC button to switch it off while pulling up the hand brake. Thanks to this one-of-a-kind eight minute long signal I was forced to people watch for entertainment. The motorcyclist in front of me kept yacking on the phone oblivious to the noise around, five idiots crossed the road on the opposite side right in front of oncoming traffic, a happy couple were engaged in an animated conversation.

All of a sudden the traffic started moving and it was time for me to move too. I put down the hand brake and got ready to enjoy the free ride when I discovered that the car's brake wasn't working. A bead of sweat trickled down my forehead as I came to terms with this new development. "Shit! The car's brakes have failed!!". My brain refused to function and the car kept moving ahead at a steady pace, a little too fast for my liking. It was really hot by now, too hot for me to think so I turned the key in the ignition to put the AC on. Voila! I'd regained control of the brakes. Apparently the brakes don't work if the car's engine is off.

My question is - HOW COME THEY DIDN'T TEACH ME THIS IN DRIVING SCHOOL????

Ummm.. have the car checked.
The hand brake should work no matter what. And if I recall correctly, your's is the i-10 rt? If its got automatic transmission, then the brakes wont work without the engine being on. Manual transmission is different.
